Help wanted: criminal justice reporter

Investigative Post is seeking applicants for a beat covering criminal justice in Buffalo and Western New York

Investigative Post is seeking an experienced, aggressive reporter to produce deeply reported, high-impact investigative and enterprise stories on the criminal justice system in Western New York for our website and television partner.

Investigative Post will build off its extensive coverage of the Buffalo Police Department and extend its reporting to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and other local police agencies. The beat will also focus on criminal courts, including Buffalo City Court and the U.S. Western District Court. Also of interest are jails and prisons; parole and probation; and the policies and practices of the district attorneys in Erie and Niagara counties and the U.S. Attorney for the Western District. The ICE Detention Center in Batavia is another topic of interest.

We’re seeking applicants with at least two years of reporting experience. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women and people of color.

We pay competitive salaries and benefits.

Investigative Post is an award-winning nonprofit investigative reporter center based in Buffalo established in 2012.

Please send a cover letter, resume (including references) and three samples of your work addressed to Jim Heaney at Include “2023 reporting application” in the subject line. Please respond by April 2.
