Buffalo’s role in the Fenian movement

The Fenian movement in the United States after the Civil War sought to gain Irish independence through a series of invasion of Canada. The largest of the military engagements, the Battle of Ridgeway, was fought just miles from the Peace Bridge. Its proximity to Buffalo was no accident: the city was a hotbed of Fenian activity.

Author Christopher Klein chronicled the short, spirited and ultimately futile life of the Fenian movement and Buffalo’s important role in the campaign in his book, When the Irish Invaded Canada: The Incredible True Story of the Civil War Veterans Who Fought for Ireland’s Freedom. Klein will discuss his book at the Irish Center, focusing on Buffalo and the Battle of Ridgeway.

Klein is the author of four books and a frequent contributor to, the web site of the History Channel, among other publications. He is a member of the Author’s Guild and Irish American Writers & Artists. He lives in suburban Boston, MA.

Tickets are $10, or free to Investigative Post members who have donated at least $100 in the past year. Want to join and support Western New York’s nonprofit investigative reporting center? You can sign up here.
