Merry Christmas! If you don’t already subscribe to WeeklyPost, give yourself a gift right now! Christmas has been effectively cancelled in Bethlehem. Alden Global Capital is the worst of the worst chain owners of newspapers. Here’s what they’ve done to the paper in Joe Biden’s hometown since buying it, and here’s what they’re doing to Greyhound bus stations. Yeah, there’s a connection. Lee Enterprises – owner of The Buffalo News, or what’s left of it – reported a disappointing year. The past five years haven’t been so hot, either.  The current issue of The Nation, much of it focused on[...]

A subscription to WeeklyPost is free. Need I say more? Politicians have pointed to the creation of 50,000 good paying jobs to justify the massive $6.4 billion subsidy of a planned microchip factory north of Syracuse. The Syracuse Post-Standard put those claims under the microscope and found direct employment would be a lot less. A whole lot less. The biggest chunk of new workers would be government employees – great – and many others would be waiters, bus drivers and hotel and day care workers – not necessarily full-time and certainly not good paying. Mind you, a lot of direct jobs will be created.[...]

The Guardian published a piece that underscored just how out of step the Bills stadium project in Orchard Park is. Most owners, says Victor Matheson, an economics professor at College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts, “understand that having an entertainment district that generates money 365 days a year is way better than the model of a walled fortress surrounded by a moat of parking lots” that is used a handful of times a year. “NFL parking lots are about the worst possible use of real estate you can think of,” he adds. “You’d much rather have a stadium in a[...]

Monday Morning Read is fine. But you’re better off subscribing to WeeklyPost. More news, sooner. Von Miller was charged last week with assaulting the pregnant mother of their children. But the story doesn’t end there. It’s the second time Miller has been  investigated for violence against a woman. Then there was the lawsuit filed against him by another woman alleging revenge porn. The charge: he shared photographs of them having sex with two celebrity friends in a “fit of jealousy, anger and rage.” The Bills signed Miller for $20 million a season to not just sack quarterbacks, but serve as a spokesman, leader and[...]

Get Jim Heaney’s entire newsletter by subscribing to WeeklyPost. John F. Kennedy was assassinated 60 years ago this week. It earned Dallas the moniker of “City of Hate.” One could argue the cancer has spread to the entire state of Texas under Gov. Greg Abbott – and beyond. Writes the Guardian: Six decades later, the city has grown beyond recognition and come a long way in grappling with that legacy. But the forces that turned Dealey Plaza into a white hot crucible are arguably more prevalent than ever.  A 24-hour news cycle; gun violence; casual accusations of treason; rightwing extremism[...]

Brian Higgins has confirmed he’s leaving Congress in February to take over the reins at Shea’s Performing Arts Center. The move has been in the works for a while, as our Geoff Kelly reported back in September. Higgins, in an interview with The Buffalo News, said Congress is “in a very, very bad place right now.” Yeah, Congress is a mess, but he’s known that for a long time. If he didn’t want to continue, he shouldn’t have run for another term. Once[...]

Moog, which shook down the Erie County IDA for its 14th subsidy earlier this year, reported a 35 percent jump in profits for the third quarter. Reported The Buffalo News: “The company said it expects its ongoing pricing and simplification efforts to further improve Moog’s profitability in the coming years.” Ken Kruly has last-minute news regarding this week’s general election. Nick Langworthy was one of 24 House Republicans who voted last week to expel George Santos.  The measure failed. Buffalo Rising had an interesting podcast interview with Frits Abell. I find this ironic: politicians complaining we’re[...]

But it’s quickly gotten out of hand. Market Watch reports on 10 athletes earning more than $1 million in endorsement deals, led by Bronny James, son of LeBron, who is pocketing an estimated $5.9 million even though he has yet to play a game for UCLA. Perhaps more troubling, as reported by The New York Times, is the practice of boosters ponying up to pay players. Reports The Times: The rapid[...]
