Tom Toles was a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist when he left Buffalo nearly 12 yeas ago to succeed the legendary Herblock at The Washington Post. Then a funny thing happened: He picked up the drum sticks and became a drummer in a rock ‘n’ roll band. Two of them, eventually. Our reports that air on WGRZ, 2 On Your Side, can be viewed on our mobile format that we rolled out last month.The upgrade is part of our continuing efforts to improve our digital presentation. Our digital agency at Bicycle Creative has reformatted the site to fit a smartphone screen and ease navigation. A large grant obtained by a coalition of progressive organizations in Buffalo includes funding for Investigative Post. The Open Society Foundation, funded by billionaire George Soros, has selected Buffalo, San Diego and Puerto Rico for two-year grants of $1.9 million each. Organizations in the three regions will be candidates for additional funding of up to $1 million a year for the following three to eight years. “Our commitment to them is long-term,” wrote Kenneth Zimmerman, a senior official with the foundation, in explaining the initiative. Buffalo News television critic Alan Pergament reports a new contract that calls for more Investigative Post stories on WGRZ. Ch. 2 President Jim Toellner lauded iPost for doing “an extremely good job” and told The News: “In partnership with Investigative Post, we’re able to do deep and intensive investigations.”
